Pupillage can be a difficult and uncertain experience. We endeavour to ensure that neither is true of pupillage at 55 Temple Chambers. We are a friendly and informal set with a strong record of recruiting from our own pupils. Pupils are expected to work hard, but within a relaxed and supportive environment.
What we look for
While there are no formal minimum degree requirements, successful pupillage candidates will typically have an upper second class degree or higher, be able to demonstrate intellectual rigour and curiosity, articulate complex arguments clearly and succinctly, possess a sound temperament and have an ability to get on with people from diverse backgrounds.
Application and funding
We are a member of OLPAS and recruit in the autumn season. While the number of pupils taken on varies from year to year, we usually take on one to two first six pupils a year.
First six pupils are always taken on with a view to offering a second six (and, subsequently, a tenancy). Over the past six years, we have offered tenancies to approximately 70% of our pupils.
First six pupils receive an award of £5,000 paid in equal monthly instalments; second six pupils are guaranteed earnings of at least £5,000.
Structure of pupillage
Pupils will be allocated a single pupil supervisor during any six month period of pupillage, but will be expected and encouraged to work for, and accompany to court, all members of chambers.
While we do not at present require pupils to undertake any formal advocacy exercises within chambers, pupils are likely to be asked to undertake informal advocacy exercises, particularly towards the end of their first six. Pupils are encouraged to develop their advocacy skills during their first six by working for the Free Representation Unit.
We are happy to offer mini-pupillages to those who have at least reached the final year of their degrees. Applications for mini-pupillages should be made by C. V. and covering letter to Lisa Johnson by post or e-mail.
