Member of the Criminal Bar Association.

Julia Needham practises in the field of Criminal law, predominantly on behalf of the Crown, and is regularly instructed to prosecute cases where complex disclosure issues arise or human rights are engaged.

She has particular expertise in the area of Anti-Social Behaviour Legislation, and is regularly instructed to advise, draft and appear on behalf of the Crown in complex/contested ASBO cases. Reported cases include R. v. Stevens [2006] E. W. C. A. Crim. 255, in which the Court of Appeal overruled the previous authority of R. v. Morrison [2005] E. W. C. A. Crim. 2237, holding that the courts' sentencing powers for a breach of ASBO were not restricted to the stautory maximum available for the type of behaviour concerned. This case is now a leading authority on sentencing for breach of ASBO.

Julia also specialises in prosecuting RTOs where technical challenges such as in relation to the reliability of the police breath-testing equipment are raised.

In addition to those memberships mentioned above, Julia is a member of Amnesty International, Liberty and Justice.
