James Benson practises in crime, immigration and general civil law. His criminal practice includes both prosecution and defence work, including private prosecutions on behalf of the D. W. P., and encompasses a broad range of both Crown and Magistrates' Court work. Recent prosecutions that have attracted media attention include R. v. Weinstock and R. v. Rhoden. James has also appeared a number of times on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Divisional Court.
His immigration practice encompasses predominantly asylum and human rights appeals, which have included several appearances before the Tribunal. Recent appearances in the Tribunal have resulted in reported decisions. James Benson has represented appellants from a wide range of countries, including Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Rwanda, Sudan, China, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Ukraine, Serbia, and Kosovo. James also works in other areas of immigration law, including entry clearance matters.
In civil law, James undertakes winding up applications in the Companies' Court, possession proceedings, consumer credit matters, personal injury actions (including child settlements), and bankruptcy petitions.
